How Great Leaders Inspire Action

There are many people who question how great leaders inspire action. Great leaders do not only talk the talk; they do the walk as well. Unfortunately, much of what we ascribe to leadership can be attributed to the tactics and behavior of the so-called leaders. However, there is one trait that all great leaders share, and that is an ability to communicate to their followers in such a way that they are consistently inspired to take action.

It may sound like an oversimplification, but the concept of how great leaders inspire action can be explained in very simple terms. Let’s say you are planning a major project for your company. If you are starting off on your project without any major goals or even any guidelines to begin with, how are you supposed to get people to take action? You cannot simply tell your employees to go take a vacation; it will not make any sense whatsoever. You need to get people to take a look at your plan.

This same principle applies to the larger picture of how great leaders inspire action. You cannot simply tell your employees to go do something that does not have any connection to the success of the company. You need to first identify the need for the project, and then figure out how you can best provide the funds necessary to make it happen. In order to do this, you need to get everyone else on board with the idea, including your boss. Only then can you properly promote the project.

Consider for a moment the importance of the civil rights movement and how it galvanized local and national action. When Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out against discrimination at the white-run Southern lunch counters, many businesses quickly got behind the idea and changed their policies. This same thing happened to small businesses when the “AIDS crisis” galvanized the American public and caused them to rally around issues of gay rights.

You can also use the AIDS crisis as an example of how leaders can inspire action. The issue was such a large part of the culture at the time that it was easy to unite people around it. It became a kind of gold circle that was impossible to not be part of. Once it began to die down, though, the idea died down as well. The great thing about this is that if you are able to continue to build upon the momentum once the initial momentum dies down, you can continue to grow the momentum even after it has died down.

Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi recognized that there are great leaders in all types of organizations. He saw that even though there were bad leaders as well as good leaders, having the ability to hold people by their noses and insist that they do what is right created a environment that was just not possible to organize under. What is even more amazing is that he realized that the key to being able to do that was the ability to create a situation where no one else had a chance to act. To do that, though, you need leaders who inspire us. It is a little-known secret that leaders who inspire us become our best friends and then our best advocates as well.

A good example of how you can use this to inspire people is by understanding that there are three stages of change. First, you have the beginnings of change, which take place during the planning stage. This is when you start getting ideas for how to implement your vision. Then you have the critical stage, which occurs once you have the actual implementation details down. Finally, you have the aftermath stage, which is when you have dealt with the problems that arose as a result of the critical phase of your plan.

When you are trying to figure out how to get others to feel like you are effective, it is important to remember that great leaders are rarely in their best mood. They put in a lot of work and effort, but they always come back with a smile on their face. If you have ever observed or been around someone like that, then you know how motivated people can be. They will go to any length to make sure that they are being taken care of. You should model this behavior when you need to get others motivated. That is how great leaders inspire action.
